 Heroin, oxycodone, and morphine are MOPR agonists, which means that they interact with the MOPR and cause its activity (a compound such as naloxone is an antagonist and blocks MOPR activity). Methadone is a synthetic opioid chemical originally developed in the 1930s. In general, an opioid is a compound which can bind into the mu opioid receptor (MOPR) and induce its action. The MOPR is broadly distributed throughout the brain but is highly enriched in areas of the brain involved in reward. A chemical that triggers a receptor is called an agonist while a chemical which blocks receptor function is also called an antagonist. 

Action needs to be taken to prevent addiction to prescription opioids and therapy for people already addicted to prescription opioids or heroin. What is the solution to this problem? Like many complex public health issues, the strategy has to be multifaceted targeting prevention and therapy.  Luckily, an effective treatment for prescription alcoholism and opioid addiction has been around since the 1960's: methadone. But what is methadone used for? How does it work and does it actually keep an addict off of heroin? And if this is so, why is not it being used more often? The brief response is that methadone is an incredibly safe and effective treatment for heroin addiction, but prevalent stigma and excessively tough regulations have averted its accessibility to people that need it.
